Abstract

Sphaerospora ojiroveci n. sp. (Myxozoa) is described from renal corpuscles and renal tubules of Pangasius sutchi (Teleostei) from Southeast Asia. Monosporic pseudoplasmodia produce spores which are miter-shaped in suturai view, averaging 8.0 μm in length and 6.9 μm in thickness, polar capsules being 2.8 by 3.5 μm in size. Immature spores are characterized by a semicircular mass attached to their truncate posterior end. Ultrastructurally, the polar filament is circular in transverse section unlike most other myxozoans. The immature polar filament reveals surface fibers spaced at 12 nm; this seems to be a feature common to all myxozoans. The occurrence of tertiary cells during sporogenesis is interpreted as the way of cell proliferation in sporoblast production. S. ojiroveci reveals some of the ultrastructural features which may be used for a future classification of species within the genus.
